Quick Question?

If you have a quick question that does not require a conversation you may email the advisor at advisor@english.wisc.edu.  Be sure to email from your wisc.edu email account (why?) and include your CampusID number.

If it is determined that your question can not be answered over email you may be asked to make an appointment.

Appointments

You can make an appointment online using the WiscCal Scheduling Assistant.  Go to:  https://tools.wisccal.wisc.edu/available/public/profiles/RubKiRBf.html

If you need to cancel the appointment you can do so through WiscCal.  Links are available on the UW homepage and in MyUW.

Please do not email to request an appointment.  Appointments are scheduled at 15 minute intervals between 9:00am-12pm and 1:00pm-3:15pm.  Appointments are scheduled up to one week in advance.

If you are making an appointment to declare an English major make sure that you have met the requirements for declaration before you make an appointment.

Be Prepared for your Advising Appointment

It is recommended that you bring a copy of your DARS report with you to your advising appointment.  This is for your benefit.  If you don’t bring one with you that’s ok, just realize that one will not be provided for you.

Not sure how to print your DARS report?  Instructions for how to do so are located here: http://www.registrar.wisc.edu/students/acadrecords/dars/student_quick_guide.html

Even if you choose not to bring a copy of your DARS report you should come to your appointment prepared.  You should bring the following:

  • any questions you have about requirements, extracurricular opportunities or whatever is on your mind
  • a pen and paper for note taking
  • if the purpose of your appointment is to have a form signed, make sure that you have filled out all pertinent information and have read the form/document thoroughly.

What to expect from academic advising in the Department of English

Academic advisors are available to answer any questions you may have and make suggestions about the options that are available to you.  They can help you interpret a degree audit report and make recommendations about completing degree requirements, they can make suggestions about extracurricular opportunities (internships, study abroad, campus activities etc.) and help you start planning for life after graduation.

Advisors are not dictators or mind readers, you must take ultimate responsibility for your education and be prepared to ask questions about things you are interested in or have concerns about.  Beyond an appointment to declare a major you are not  required to see an advisor in the English Department.  However it is recommended that you see an advisor once a semester (and whenever you have a question or concern that can’t be answered through resources found on the web or by email).  There are a lot of possibilities that you might not be aware of and sometimes degree requirements can be difficult to understand; an advising appointment could lead to opportunities you might not otherwise be aware of.

The only time advising appointments will be limited is if you have repeatedly failed to show up for previous appointments and it is during the peak advising period (just before early registration and at the start of the semester).  If you are interested in making a long term plan for graduation try to make an appointment between the 4th and 9th week of the semester or anytime during the summer.
