PhD in Composition & Rhetoric
The PhD Program in Composition and Rhetoric is a multidisciplinary program with a small faculty-to-student ratio, committed to providing outstanding graduate education focused on issues and problems that matter in rhetoric, language, literacy, and learning in contemporary society.
The broad-based program prepares students for well-rounded careers as scholar-teachers. Coursework is offered in composition theory and practice; rhetoric; literacy; critical theory; discourse analysis; and research methods. Special topic seminars are offered each year. Students may minor in such fields as applied linguistics; communication arts; creative writing; education; ethnic studies; literary studies; women's studies; and other fields.
Professional development is also a vital element of the program. opportunities include a reflective environment for teaching in the first-year and intermediate writing programs and in the renowned Writing Center. Graduate students may assist in writing program administration, writing-in-the-disciplines, and other programs. Professional activism is also encouraged through faculty-student research collaborations, travel to conferences, and regular colloquia.
