Visualizing Beowulf: an interview with John Niles
John Niles joined the UW-Madison faculty from UC-Berkeley in 2001 and is the Nancy C. Hoefs Professor of English.
Q. Much of your published research relates to the Old English poem of Beowulf, though I know your interests extend into other areas as well. Are you at work on a current research project involving that poem?
Definitely, yes! Right now I’m part of a team of three North American specialists who are preparing a new edition of Beowulf, one that we hope will set a scholarly standard for some time to come. We aim to replace an edition published by Friedrich Klaeber in 1950 that remains the best in the field, though it is now outdated in many regards.
