English 201 / For Students
Course Reviews
Students write in! Here's what students and alumni have to say about their experiences in English 201. Although English 201 sections vary in content and focus, all sections include intensive practice in writing and a focus on developing the ability to respond to and analyze how writing works.
"I really enjoyed the contemporary topics..."

"I was googling my name today to see if my blog website would [come] up and I came across my Lambeau Field paper that I wrote in your English class. I wanted to thank you for classifying it as "excellent." It was really encouraging for what I am doing right now. This summer I started writing again and I have got a lot of positive response for my website. I think that Lambeau Field paper really ignited a spark in me."

"I just wanted to let you know, this class has helped me in countless
ways. I'm writing my final essay for Poli Sci 411 right now, and looking back
to my midterm essay, this one is going to blow it out of the proverbial water!!
All thanks to English 201. My arguments seem so much clearer, and I'm even
addressing and refuting the arguments of the opposing side, using terms like
"fallacy" and "precedent". How many others will have that
one?!! One of my original fears of English 201 was that I would be behind
the other students, in that I didn't have to take a "Comm A" class.
However, you were always open to my questions, and I loved having the support
and feedback from the class. Your workshop idea was a complete success, as
was the class as a whole. Thank you for a great semester, I don't know if
your "superiors" on the 6th floor ever want recommendations from
students, but if they do, you can count on a (pardon my French) kickass recommendation
from me. I wish you luck with your work, and future classes."
Johnathan Blomberg, Fall 2002
"Thank you for a great semester and for all of the guidance. Hope you
have a great Christmas. Thanks for making me a better writer and more confident.
At least I know where to start. I never imagined that writing entailed so
much. All you learn in all the other classes are the rules and that you need
to follow them. (Grammar that is.) But you have shown it to encompass a lot
more, and more entertaining for sure. This is my only class in college that
was exciting to go to everyday. You give a more hands on learning and really
challenged us to think. Many teachers or TA's never get the true meaning of
teaching. Just to let you know if you ever need a recommendation from me,
ask me. I really can criticize teacher in many aspects. Good and bad points
and ways to improve, or solutions. My mother is a teacher and for her students
she taught them with hands on and got students to read who couldn't read and
the became excited about reading. She got a student excited about Science
who went from D's To A's. She cares about the students and so do you."
Carrie Ahlstrom, Fall 2002
"I'm really happy to know that you think my work has improved over the
semester. I'll be honest and say when the class first started I really didn't
enjoy the work we were doing, but the last 2 papers made up for that. I enjoyed
writing them, especially the last one, and that's not usually something I
would say. You really did teach us (well at least me) to read, and reread,
my work. I think this is something that will really help me in the future.
I've never been this critical of my own work, and now I know that I should
never be satisfied there's always work that can be done. So I know you thanked
us today for all of our hard work, but I wanted to thank you for all your
hard work. It's so much easier to go to a class, especially one at 8:50 in
the morning, when the professor is enthusiastic about what they do. I can
definitely tell you like your work, and you want us to enjoy it too. For a
teacher I think this is the most important quality to have."
Corrine Lettier, Fall 2001
"I just wanted to send you an email to let you know that I really enjoy
coming to your class. Today after my group discussed the style analysis of
Elbow, I asked them what they thought of our class. They, and I, find your
class very entertaining and relevant to our own lives. It really lifts my
spirits, and I'm looking forward to the remainder of the semester." Thank
you for making class fun.
